The Greatest Victim
HOW CAN A HUMAN BEING value the fruits of science in the modern world? It seems that no matter how much good the scientific community tries to bring to the Earth and to humanity, the result is always some form of destruction. Scientists must develop a sense of disconnection from the results of what they have discovered. Those who cannot develop this ethical detachment must abandon the field and recognize that many years of difficult study and perhaps their life's work has been nothing more than a waste of time and energy. Perhaps this is the reason that scientists continue to victimize themselves and humanity.
Consider the work of the scientists that developed new uses for the waste products that come from refining oil into gasoline. These scientists must have recognized that the sludge that is left over from this process would have to be dealt with. Coming near this toxic waste is very dangerous. If nothing could be done with it, it would have to be thrown into the deep waters of the world or buried deep in the Earth. Surely it is much better to find some way to use this waste. This is such an obviously good thing to do.
These scientists saw a problem to be solved and a purpose for their skills. They developed chemical processes that convert the toxic waste products into useful objects, and so the plastics industry was born. This waste was so versatile that it could be converted into almost anything: clothing, furniture, and toys, even medicine. It was a miracle of innovation and the salvation of humanity. Scientists and the businesses that sponsored them became fabulously rich. With this wealth came the corruption of human greed.
We sometimes hear the names of these companies, DuPont, Monsanto, BSF, Dow Chemical, 3M, and others. These companies have become responsible for poisoning the Earth and the people who inhabit it on an unimaginably massive scale. The human suffering and the suffering of others far outweigh the benefits to humanity.
Who is responsible for this suffering? Is it the multi-national corporations? Is it the shareholders who benefit from the profits that these companies produce? Is it the scientists who create more and more products at the request of their corporate masters?
The Division of Laboratory Sciences, National Center for Environmental Health Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducted a study recently to determine how much pollution is in the blood of the average American. They selected a well-known pollutant that has been shown to cause cancer in other animals. The pollutants that were studied are called polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFC's). They are regularly produced in the manufacturing of many common plastics. They are also present in the products that are produced.
The study found that every person they tested contained some level of these unnatural substances. The study is to be used as a baseline for the population of the United States. That means that if you are reading this, you probably have a significant concentration of these chemicals in your body right now.
Your body cannot process these chemicals. They contribute to the cancerous growths that form all throughout your body as you grow older. They make it more difficult for your body to recognize abnormal cell growth because the body is not built to see them. They are invisible to the systems of the body because they are unnatural. These chemicals are shortening your life. They are killing you and me right now.
These chemicals were meant to make our lives better. They were meant to ease the suffering of humanity by giving us the ability to manipulate our environment as we see fit. They would help feed the hungry and house and clothe the poor. Every person would have a job and money enough to buy the cheap products that could be made from these chemicals.
Instead, they are killing us.
We are all the victims of this crime. We all bear the scars of the well-meaning scientists who created these products and the plants that produce them. It is as if the scientists reached out to us with the love in their hearts and slit our throats with the knife they use to sculpt the very products that are meant to serve us.
The scientists are even more of a victim than the people that they have harmed. The scientists must bear the burden of poisoning themselves and poisoning humanity. The spiritual cost of this cannot be avoided. Where the average American suffers a shorter life and a death of pain and suffering at the hands of the medical establishment, the scientist must suffer this as well, but the scientist must also suffer as he or she stands before the Divine World and his or her brain tells the story of how they built walls between the concepts of humanity and greed. The scientist must also suffer as his or her heart tells the story of how they stifled the horror that was clear to see in the absence of life found in the sterile laboratories where they work.
The scientists will not escape from this. What will be their fate? A scientist must be the greatest victim of all.
